How to age my new to me Nuffield 4-65

Post by smith.nathan88 » Fri Oct 04, 2019 5:43 pm

I have recently bought a nuffield 4-65 for 2500 Cdn. I am going to fit it with a new alternator to replace the generator and regulator. Is the starter polarity sensative. I am going to have to switch it to nagative ground. Another question is what is that senser infront of the seat on the transmission?

Hi

The starter motor is not polarity sensitive as both the armature and field windings are reversed in unison.

I think the device you are referring to is the starter inhibitor switch which prevents you starting the engine while the tractor is in gear.

Yes the above answer beat me to it. I have put alternators on several makes of old tractors without any problems.
Will your tractor have a large electrical load on it? because I have recently restored a dynamo (Lucas C40) brushes and a new regulator were very cheap on the well known auction website, at least in the UK they are.

Hi, Regarding the age of your tractor, that model was built from 1967 to 1969. If you look at the FAQ section of the forum there is a section on casting dates that will help you get a more accurate age for your tractor.

I recently switched mine over to negative ground. I went for a Kubota alternator, a bit smaller in physical size to make sure it would fit behind the side panels nicely.
