Leyland 245 & Topper shearing bolt breaking

Post by Newbie_wilts » Sun Oct 06, 2019 9:34 pm

Hi all.
Go easy on me, day 2 on the job :D Just purchased a Leyland 245 and a Major 605SL 6ft topper. Unfortunately after c.10 minutes of cutting, the shearing bolt will snap.

- I’ve checked the topper is oiled.
-Ordered ‘PTO Shaft Shear Bolt M8 x 50mm Grade 8.8 (yet to be put on).
- Will sharpen blades

Open to your thoughts/ideas?

Thanks

Hi Rick

I’d say they’re aligned and the bolt threads through fine.

Thanks
Chris

Hi
Have you any confidence in the pedigree of the bolt(s) you have snapped?

Regards

Thanks all. It’s all definitely aligned correctly from what I can tell. The bolts I’ve been using are just from a local tool station and I can’t see the grade on them. I’ll try the new shear bolts (grade 8) I’ve just bought at the weekend and let you know how it goes.

I have a 245 as well and found that as long as I had the revs up rapid deceleration and acceleration upon negotiating hills were minimised and kept the shear bolts from breaking.

I used to go through shear bolts like sweets as we would start the 245 while pto is in gear. We never used the pto clutch. We never had a manual nor demo on how to activate the pto gear properly. We never knew what this special pedal and handbrake like lever was for.

Any text or advice on the exact procedure on how to gradually engage the PTO would be welcome. I'm going to put MF 135 power steering kit on it next year plus get all electrics working, a new back window and seat. Road tax can wait !!

I’d love to see a before and after photo. I need to do the electrics on mine too, I can’t even find the light switch within the cab so I’m assuming its been removed.
I also have to engage PTO with the engine off but with the hand clutch up and slowly let it down engaging the PTO.
