Your Leyland must be Synchro and it`s slow compared non-synchro.
Year model doesn`t match, maybe box is retrofitted? Synchro box was introduced 1978.

Retrofitting a Synchro 'box was a service fix to overcome customer complaints associated with the 5 x 2 'box.
The 6 cyl Synchro 'box was designed to accept the "County" circular half axles.

It had central mounted gear levers with a hole cut in the cab floor. The production 285/2100 Synchro had the side mounted shift levers.

The JCB 'box would have the "Oval" machining to accept the "Leyland" half axles.
